Play To Your Strengths
What’s your favourite team sport? Whether its cricket, rugby, AFL or soccer, one thing’s for sure – the best team is made up of players who know their role and perform at their best.
It’s the same in business. Just as one individual can’t be all over the field, we need to focus on the area in business we are best suited to.
I was working with a team this week and we examined everyone’s DISC profile. (DISC is a behaviour profiling tool). It was very clear that the two Directors have complimentary styles – one is very outgoing and builds great relationships, the other one is more analytical and loves the strategy and new ideas. By understanding their strengths I was able to help them clarify their roles in the business.
Equally important was the revelation that neither of them like the admin and processes in the business. But their team loves systems and process and are crying out for them. The Directors had put off developing the processes in the business because they don’t like or value that work. By understanding that they have people in the business for whom this is a strength, they have been able to delegate that work – knowing it will get done quicker and better than they could do it.
So, my productivity tip is to know your strengths and don’t be afraid to surround yourself with people who are better than you in your weakest areas.
